Lesson I-24: Reading Song

1000 Chinese Foundation Characters

Book I, Lesson 24 (→ Index Introduction)

Hanzi Pinyin English
 《读书歌》  dúshū gē  Reading song
读书好,读书好,  dúshū hǎo, dúshū hǎo,  Reading is good, reading is good,
读得书多无价宝。*  dú dé shū duō wú jià bǎo *  reading books more valuable than a priceless jewel. *
愿读书,在年少。  Yuàn dúshū, zài niánshào  want to read while young.
可怜多少苦同胞,  Kělián duōshǎo kǔ tóngbāo,  Pity all the poor comrades
无识无知忏到老。 Wú shí/zhì wúzhī chàn dào lǎo   without knowledge/writing, ignorance, regret until old age
请问读书好不好?  Qǐngwèn dúshū hǎo bù hǎo?  May I ask, is reading good?
好!好!好!  Hǎo! Hǎo! Hǎo!  Good! Good! Good!

* I’m not sure about the grammar here. I think “读得书多无价宝” is just “读书得多无价宝” rearranged a bit so it rhymes better, but maybe it’s something more complicated… ⇒ Chinese Grammar wiki

Hastily-written scheduling update

Once again, a slight change in plans since I find it difficult to keep to the schedule at the moment. Basically, drawing the mnemonics takes slightly less time than the idiom illustrations on average, but it’s less predictable how much exactly for each, so it’s difficult to schedule for it. Right now I’ve got a handful of pictures in various stages of completion, when I’d really need one finished one right now…

So instead I’ll post #23 of the Foundation Character Lessons today and #24 (last part of Book I) on Friday.

After that, the Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule will continue, but I’ll focus on… some stuff that doesn’t take quite as much time to prepare until I’ve managed to rebuild my buffer. More details next week probably.
