Since finishing up the last of the Kangxi Radicals mnemonic pictures I’ve been thinking about where to go next.
It’s difficult to say to what extent pictures like these (meaning those that directly and primarily attempt to capture the forms of characters) are useful. I do think they can be helpful, otherwise I wouldn’t have put as much effort into making them, but there are definitely limitations. For one thing, I don’t think they should be at the center of a study approach. For another, there probably comes a point of diminishing returns.
My personal gut feeling is that I’ve been approaching the upper limit of the number of mnemonic pictures (in the narrower sense) that are truly helpful. I might add a few more here and there, and there are couple of ways in which plan to get back to the Kangxi Radicals pictures, but in a meaningful sense that project is done. I’ll talk about what I’ve learned from it at some other point. Right now, the question is what’s next?
I have a bunch of things I want to do and am kind of itching to talk about, but I’ll keep to what’s actually already done or currently in progress. Basically, I’ve experimented with some variations on illustrating vocabulary.
I came up with a couple of nice ones and I’ll post these, but ultimately going back to idioms turned out to be the most fruitful. It took me a bit get a handle on them and I am still feeling my way around, but it’s shaping up nicely so far. I’m not not sure how many I’ll do, but I’m thinking at least 50. Probably more ultimately, but I think I can promise 50 with some confidence.
I also should mention I’ll probably go back to a fairly regular Mo/Wed/Sat schedule once the last radicals pictures and some bonus material have been posted. That’s the current plan anyway.
