I’m not necessarily suggesting these characters for learning, but they make for good examples, since they are constructed in a very regular way (most characters are not, inconveniently).

If you understand how pictophonetic characters work, know the radicals, and you know words in the spoken language that these characters are used for, then they probably aren’t too difficult to learn.

Pīnyīn:

龙 [龍] ~ lóng ~ dragon, imperial
• Radical: 龙 [龍] (dragon)

胧 [朧] ~ lóng ~ rising moon
• Radical: 月 (moon) / 肉 (meat) *

聋 [聾] ~ lóng ~ deaf
• Radical: 耳 (ear)

咙 [嚨] ~ lóng ~ throat
• Radical: 口 (mouth)

砻 [礱] ~ lóng ~ to grind, to mill
• Radical: 石 (rock)

栊 [櫳] ~ lóng ~ bar, cage
• Radical: 木 (wood)

笼 [籠] ~ lóng ~ basket, cage, flat bamboo basket used to serve dimsum
• Radical: 竹 (bamboo)

珑 [瓏] ~ lóng ~ tinkling of gem-pendants
• Radical: 玉 (jade)

茏 [蘢] ~ lóng ~ Oriental lady’s thumb (Polygonum posumbu)
•  Radical: 艸 (grass)

泷 [瀧] ~ lóng ~ rapids, waterfall, torrential (rain)
•  Radical: 水 (water)

* I found 肉 (meat) listed as the radical in some places. It’s probably just due to how the component-forms of the “meat” radical and the “moon” radical will look alike.I mean, it’s got “moon” right there as part of the meaning, so that seems obvious enough. (Okay, so maybe that’s not the kind of reasoning that would impress a professional etymologist.)

Anyhow, things to keep in mind:

  1. Characters in written Chinese correspond to syllables of the spoken language, but are (usually) more specific
  2. Chinese has a lot of homonyms and near-homonyms.
